Prior to returning to academia to earn a Ph.D., Brendan worked for the St. Petersburg Times as an online news editor and multimedia producer.
Below is a small sample of a couple of the projects Brendan worked on while at the newspaper.
Multimedia Projects:
Zoo Story – Brendan produced a podcast version of this nine part series, and video reports for the online and Newspapers in Education components of this story examining the history, philosophy, and controversy surrounding modern zoo collections, through the prism of the Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.
Hidden Lead – Brendan was part of a multimedia reporting team, which produced a series for print and online about the risks of lead poisoning from children’s products. Among his roles in the project, Brendan shot and edited all of the videos for the online report.
Our Casualties of War – Brendan participated in interviewing the surviving relatives of Tampa Bay area soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Brendan’s also produced the “Memorial” section of this project, a moving collection of interviews and photos about the soldiers.
In Their Eyes – Brendan produced these moving audio slideshows in which the newspaper photographers recount the emotional toll of covering Hurricane Katrina.
